The human mind is a storage of aspirations. There are many things in life that an individual wants to do or achieve. I firmly believe that each of us should have a target or goal in life. Now to achieve that ultimate goal you need to follow a path where you have set goals at regular, smaller intervals. Goal setting is a very important aspect of any person’s life. You have to determine the place you ought to be in terms of relationships or career after a certain point of time. No one can stay stagnant at one place, everyone has to have higher goals and try to achieve them.
Goal setting is not just a formality, it is a planned decision taken in order to show the expectation from an individual or a company in a certain period of time. The goal setting for a person can be done in two ways, either by self or by some one else. I have noticed that goal setting helps to motivate people; and it also helps others judge the caliber of a person. These goals can be personal, professional etc.
The goal setting process should be practical; it should not revolve on hypothetical lines. If I start a small IT company from my home, I should not set a goal that in 1 year I will compete with Microsoft or be the richest man in the world. The first goal should be to make it a profit making company. Then achieve a certain amount of profit on consistent basis, and then I can think of expansion etc. This is the way it should happen; you should set high goals but not so high that they are practically impossible.
On the contrary I have seen people set goals that kind of insulting their potential and ability. Like a friend of mine, who was a fairly average student, he never expected to go above the standard 50-60% he got because he never tried to raise the bar. The same effect is seen on his job, he is an executive and he thinks that he will never be promoted to a manager but he might reach the senior executive level some day. This kind of attitude does not only lead to pessimistic behavior but also limits your capabilities as you anyway do not intend to use them to the fullest.
The goal setting for an individual is very important to determine the amount of success he/she might be able to achieve in a lifetime. A practical approach with reality driven goals and the appropriate time frame can help you to motivate yourself so that you can do well and achieve all success in the shortest possible time. Today this practice is also used by companies to gauge the potential of an employee. Achieving the goals you set is no big deal but it is the way you have achieved it and how difficult the goal was. Setting a goal like something you have always done and achieving it again is no big deal but setting a goal which you or no one else has achieved and then achieving it is the real application of this process.

Many times I have come across situations when I am surrounded by a group of people, who are not that appreciative of my presence or are not that fond of me. Such situations are very tricky especially when it is in your college, class or may be work. It is very difficult to work amongst people with whom you do not get along with. The worst cases are when those people just happen to be your bosses or subordinates; as they can create unwanted trouble by either putting an extra work load or by not completing the given work, which ultimately puts you in the line of fire.
This is a big problem as you cannot leave your work place just because your work mates are not that friendly, especially when there is so much competition for each vacancy now days. As it is said that each problem has a solution, I thought that there needs to be an alternative to this situation as well. With the help of some efforts and study I discovered that most of the people joining at managerial level get a hostile response in the beginning as the employees feel that they have lost a chance of promotion. Then there are certain ways that can help you tackle such resistance if you are new to the organization or even if you are an old employee.
The first thing to remember in such a case is to never let the other person know about your thoughts on him/her. Try to be as polite as you can with such people and avoid any arguments or disagreements as much as possible. Even if you are at a senior position try to be among your people and make them feel that they are important and without the contribution of each individual the team is incomplete. This not only helps you to understand the mindset of the people and the reasons they find you unapproachable but also helps you understand the reasons they might not like you. In my opinion the most tried and tested formula is to let them know that you appreciate them and letting them know that you will be available in case any help is required. This creates a bond of trust and faith and can be instrumental to develop a good working relation.
Now, another problem arises when the above system fails to function. Even after your efforts to nullify the gap, if the people around you are still hostile, there are a very few things that you can do. One thing is that you can sit with them and clarify that personal distances should not create a hindrance in the task to be completed. Another option is to minimize your interaction with such people so that you never get into a soup like situation. Sometimes it is also important to make the other person realize that he/she might also rely on you for a certain work to be done and hence you share a give and take relation.
Any environment you are a part of, you will always find a few positives and a few negatives. It totally depends on how you take up the challenge and convert the negatives into positives because the faster you learn this art, the faster you will grow in a company.
